Making The Old New Again!!

One of my favorite things to do is go "junking" on thursdays...whether this be garage saling or hitting my local thrift shops. You never know what you may find and you know the old saying..."one man's junk is another man's treasure"!!

Well...a  few weeks ago i found an awesome shelf...a little dirty and greasy from hanging in someone's kitchen...but it had awesome bones!!
And hour and a little "mean green" later....i had a clean slate!

I wish i had a before pic to show because the after is so great.
I primed it ..painted it black...traced the shape of the insert...and made a pattern for a hooking to place in the center.
Here is how it turned out:
I hooked this with 100% wool yarn that i buy from the Goodwill training center in Monroe, Mi. They help the mentally disabled to find work ...and they make some of their own works of art too!!

Don't you love how this turned out!! I sandpapered the edges and rubbed in some stain to make it look a little more prim..which is how i like my stuff!!
The object of all this work is to sell it...but when i love the "after" this much it can be so hard...LOL!!

Until next time,

Toothbrush Rugs.....

When i started searching the internet for videos on how to Hook...i came across a youtube video on how to make a toothbrush rug...well, curiousity got me and i just had to see how to do it...a passion was created!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqRIqknC6UI
It is so easy...but very addicting...i started collecting sheets of all colors and patterns, had my husband make me a large needle from a toothbrush and away i went!!  I do believe everyone in my family has a rug i made...and i sold quite a few too! They are very durable and last forever...and are very comfortable under your feet!

This is the beginning of one i made for my brother in law using all his old camoflauge shirts...very hard...but worth it!

This was a special order for a little girls room...i had to dye a white cotton sheet to get the right pink to match her curtains. How sweet is that!

These are so easy to make ...and easy to take! It is a craft you can take to the park, doctor's office...or like in my case..all your kids sporting events and practices!! LOL
Just be prepared..people are very curious as to what you are doing and will ask you to show them...so have fun and share!!

Until next time,

My First Hookings!!

I Thought I would  share my first samples of hooking with you!

This was the first sample i finished using handspun wool yarn...it was so easy to work with and quick too. You don't have to worry about which way the yarn is facing which makes such a difference i think. I bought the yarn from a woman named Judy Taylor. She spins her own yarn and is a delight to work with.  You can send her paint chips or scraps of fabric...whatever you have...and she will dye the wool yarn to match...How Wonderful!! The name of her shop is
"The Little House of Rugs". Do look her up...you won't regret it!!

My piles of "noodles"!! I have to cut them the old fashion way..scissors. One day i would love to invest in a cutting tool...i'm not sure of their "proper" name..but they are expensive..so scissors will do for now! LOL
This is my pattern drawn on the monk's cloth...i really do prefer old fashion burlap though!
And here is the finished mat....what do you think?? I need a better camera so i can take better pictures...but you get the idea!! I love how this turned out...Don't you??

Wait until next time and i will show you what i am working on now....I'm already in love!! LOL!!

Until next time prim friends,

A New Beginning!!

My biggest dream is to own my own craft store..a little place that represents all my loves...and i would love to call it "The Primitive Roost"....  All things old, or "old feeling" and handcrafted with love and quality.
This, however,  is not in my near future....so the "Primitive Roost" blog has been created!!
I hope to share my love for creating and my passion for trying new crafts. Follow along as I make rugs in an old fashion way using a toothbrush, or watch as i hook a new masterpiece.
I also love to find cast offs and make them new again....Oh the fun we can have!!
I can't wait to begin this new journey and i hope to make lots of new friends along the way!!
